New Mapquest for Mobile Browsers

by GDirections on January 3, 2012

The new Mapquest for mobile browsers is amazing! I have an iPhone, so I don’t know if the site looks and works the same in all mobile phones, to be honest I simply haven’t had the chance to check out their mobile website on other operating systems. Just as their old mobile site, the new MQ for mobile browser is free as well, but now you will have access to a lot more features and tools. In the past when you visited m.mapquest.com, you were only able to get directions and explore the map using the classic map view, now users have access to satellite view as well, for example, you can switch from “satellite view” to “map view” by simply tapping on your phone’s screen.

As you can notice on the picture above, now there are many options on the site that weren’t there before, you can see how’s traffic along your route, you can drag and drop the route line to get alternate routes, and more. If you tap on “settings” a bunch of options will be automatically displayed on your phone’s screen, you can tap on the “position icon” option to mark your current location on the map, you can set “walking directions alerts”, you can enable the “label satellite maps” function to include street names when you use “satellite view”, you can set the distance units to be displayed in miles or kilometers, and you can even switch back to Classic MapQuest Mobile if that’s what you want.

I like the new Map Quest mobile a lot more, the maps are way better in my opinion, the variety of tools and options make it a lot more useful for me, their new mobile website is simply more advanced, and honestly it’s a lot better. I know that there are plenty of folks out there that love MQ classic, I understand why a lot of people prefer the old site for desktop computers, but I wouldn’t understand why would anyone prefer using the classic mobile site instead of the new one. The new site for browsers feels and looks a lot like the new MQ for desktop computers, you can easily find hotels, restaurants, airports, gas stations, etc, by simply tapping on your screen, just watch the picture below to fully understand what I’m talking about.

The new Mapquest for Mobile browsers allows you to easily zoom in and zoom out of the map by simply tapping on the “-” or “+” buttons at the bottom right corner of your iPhone’s screen. The classic mobile site was good, but the new site is fantastic! The maps look a lot better now, I imagine that the directions are just as good as they have always been, but I’m absolutely sure that due to the high quality of the maps the routes are now way easier to understand.

One last word of advice before you leave, when you see the option of switching back to the classic site ignore it, because if you decide to do it, you won’t be able to switch back to the new Mapquest mobile, I imagine that there’s a fix, but I still haven’t found one, so if you like the new site do yourself a favor and don’t take chances! Soon I’ll check out how the new site looks on Android phones, after I do that, I’ll come back to update this post.
