New Legend for Bike Routes

New Biking Directions Legend on Google Maps

by Richard on February 20, 2012

Since Google Maps introduced biking directions, people all around the US and Canada have been using this feature to create fun biking routes, others simply use bikes as their primary mode of transportation, so a lot of people use this feature to go to work, school, and to live a greener lifestyle. Up until now biking directions have been great, but a lot of users have had a hard time understanding and differentiating types of bike routes, so they made sure to let Google know.

Recently Google announced a new biking directions legend, they introduced some changes which are based on the colors of the route line, these changes will allow users to easily differentiate biking routes. Now when you visit Google Maps to get biking directions, you will notice that the routes are now laid out with different colors, each color will symbolize a different type of route.

“Dark green” routes represent dedicated trails and paths for bikers, that means that these are totally safe routes for bikers with no cars involved. “Light Green” represents roads with dedicated lanes, you’ll probably have to deal with cars, but these are still considered very safe routes. “Dotted Green” represents routes that are friendly for cyclists.

Google is extremely careful with the types of routes that they recommend to their users, you’ve probably heard about the woman who sued Google for handing out bad directions, so none of these routes are considered unsafe, and that’s exactly the reason why you should always trust the directions that Google provides.
