Google Maps vs Mapquest

by Richard on May 30, 2010

Finally the moment has come, it’s Google Maps vs MapQuest! After planning hundreds of routes with the route building tools that both of these sites offer, after driving thousands of miles across the country, after exploring their APIs, after using each and every one of their features extensively I can finally make a true honest comparison between these two truly unique online mapping services.

The first thing I want to say is that Google Maps and MapQuest offer two of the most unique web mapping applications in the world. They have very similar features, they are both free, they both are very interactive and user friendly sites, and they both provide to their users easy to understand, accurate routes. Both of these sites also offer awesome overlayed maps with multiple viewing options, both of them have enabled the street view feature which is one of my favorites, and they both offer free mobile apps! On this website we have a page for each one of these sites, on those pages you can find all the information and resources that you need in order to make your experience with these sites better. Below you will find the links to both pages just in case you want to learn more about this subject.

Google Maps
Mapquest

Mapquest and Google driving directions are for sure better than the rest, some people still argue that MapQuest directions are the best, others say that Google Maps is a better service to get driving directions, I have heard a lot of people say that the Google Maps route planner is more accurate and easier to understand, all I can say is that they are all wrong. I really don’t think that one is better than the other, deciding which service I’m going to use when I need directions has to do a lot more with my mood than anything else, sometimes I’m in the right mood for Mapquest and sometimes I feel like using Google Maps, it all depends on where I’m going. I have seen that Google sometimes hands out better routes for certain locations, the same thing happens with Map Quest.

I gotta be honest about something, when I’m going to use an online route planner most of the time I use Mapquest’s, I probably use Mapquest for directions a lot more but when I need biking, transit, walking directions, and Maps I usually visit the official Google Maps website.

One thing I like a lot about Google’s mapping service is the drag and drop feature, it makes finding alternate routes simple and easy. Mapquest’s alternate routing system is very simple and easy to use as well, all you have to do is click. Deciding over one of these two services is hard, I guess it’s really all about the end user, about what the user likes the most. It’s like ice cream, some people like chocolate ice cream more than vanilla, other people prefer vanilla, the same thing happens with Mapquest and Google Maps driving directions.

Conclusions

If you are looking for a very complete online mapping software, then I’m sure that you will want to use one of these two services or you can use them both, that’s what I do. I’m sure that if you want to find your way around any place Google Maps or Mapquest directions will get the job done.
